Vista Donuts: Murrieta.
Donuts from Vista Donut in Murrieta, California
“We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once, before a word is spoken.” Fyodor Dostoevsky
Bill and Casey are two of my favorite people from Murrieta and I met them both in the a donut shop.
Meet Casey.
After coming out of the nearby hills, my first stop in Murrieta, California was the local donut shop. Vista Donuts is the place. I sat down to a coffee and an apple fritter. MMMmmm… (In fact, I want one know as I am writing this.)
Casey works at Vista Donuts. As I talked to Charlotte and Dolly, she thought my traveling story was neat-o and protectively sends me out the door with another donut (I went with chocolate custard this time) and a bottle of orange juice.
I went back to see Casey numerous times. In the morning, Vista Donuts is jumping with a huge line. I liked to go a little later after the line had subsided so we could talk.
Casey is from Cambodia. She left in the 70′s as they were having a revolution. After she spent a year in the refugee camp on the border of Cambodia and Thailand, she was eligible to go to the USA. Her sister had immigrated earlier and she successfully passed the test.
Casey tells me about the biggest temple in the world that I should go visit. It is in Cambodia. She also loves donuts and insists I take extras.

More Donuts... Casey didn't want her photograph taken.
Meet Bill.
One of the busy mornings, I sit down next to Bill. He is sitting alone in the crowded restaurant. Bill has a grizzled gray beard and sideburns. He wears a black leather cowboy hat and a Wrangler vest. The vest is faded from work. Bill is finishing his coffee before he has to go to work. He has to break a horse today on the ranch he works on.
Bill is single. “Just me, my horse, and my dog.” His horse is named Winddancer. She is a mustang. Big too. Bill might ride her later.
Bill says that there is work around here if I need it. It helps if I speak “Mexican” though. Bill has a tough time getting work, because he doesn’t. Although his boss might have him go work in Arizona. It is cheaper there too.
